3 ways to celebrate World Oral Health Day

On March 20, make a pledge to practice good oral hygiene and reduce the burden of developing oral disease.

Did you know March 20 is World Oral Health Day? Originally started by the FDI World Dental Federation, this year’s World Oral Health Day is dedicated to inspiring change by highlighting the importance of oral health at every age.

Oral health is the gateway to overall health. Caring for your teeth have a positive impact on your mental health and lowers your risk of developing heart disease and other health issues.

Improve your emotional well-being

Oral diseases can cause chronic pain, disrupt sleep, and negatively impact your self-esteem — all of which contributes to mental health. Taking care of your smile leads to higher confidence, which boosts positive feelings of well-being.

The mouth-body connection

Neglecting to brush, floss or schedule regular dental check-ups can cause bacteria to build up in your mouth, leading to periodontal (gum) disease. The resulting inflammation can damage tiny blood vessels in your gums, granting oral bacteria access to your bloodstream. Heart disease, diabetes and even cognitive decline have been linked to poor oral hygiene.

World Oral Health Day helps reduce the global burden of oral diseases by educating and empowering people to take control of their oral health. Healthy habits and preventive measures can keep periodontal disease at bay, ensuring better health overall.
