Fight the flu with a healthy mouth

As you probably know, your oral health plays an important role in your overall health. But did you know that good hygiene can help you stay healthy during the flu and cold season?

When you are sick, your oral health may be the last thing on your mind. The truth is effective oral health care is essential for fighting bacteria that can lead to infections and more severe flu and cold symptoms.

With this year’s flu and cold season expected to last until May, here are five things you can do to keep your mouth and body healthy.

Brush and floss daily — to keep your mouth and teeth clean, make sure you continue to brush twice a day and floss at least once every day. remember to brush for at least two minutes to keep up on your good oral hygiene habits.

Stay hydrated to avoid dry mouth — When your body is sick, you need extra fluids to fight infection. Dry mouth reduces saliva, which is important in preventing cavity-causing bacteria and gum disease. Drinking plenty of water, soup and juice can keep you well hydrated when you are sick.

Toss your toothbrush — Your old toothbrush can host bacteria and make you sick again. Once you start to feel better, replace your toothbrush. Since the flu virus can live in moist areas for up to 72 hours, tossing your toothbrush can help ensure you don’t reinfect yourself.

Gargle in warm saltwater — It may be an old remedy for a cleaner mouth, but it really works. Gargling a glass of warm saltwater cuts down the harmful bacteria in your throat and mouth, reducing plaque and bad breath.

Choose sugar-free medication — Many cough drops and syrups use sugar to sweeten the taste. This can cause tooth decay and harm your gums. Look for medicines that include sugar substitutes like sucralose or xylitol.

Throughout the cold and flu season, don’t forget to think about how good oral hygiene can help you fight bacteria and reduce other cold or flu-related symptoms.
