A less stressful summer is just one week away

In theory, summer may seem like smooth sailing — an ideal time to relax, socialize, take time off and enjoy yourself. The reality, though, can feel pretty stressful: You’ve got vacations to plan or out-of-town visitors angling to stay with you. Plus the kids are out of school and depend on you to help them shift their schedules to camp, summer jobs and other responsibilities.

Sounds like a lot to juggle, right? When summer stresses add up, try this seven-day plan to relax, slow down and improve your mood. You might find yourself back on an even keel sooner than you think.

SUNDAY: Relax. Meditate or take a long walk. Quiet reflection can improve your state of mind. Give yourself time to prepare for the week ahead.

MONDAY: Make a plan. Decide what tasks you need to complete and what can wait. Plan some events you'll look forward to.

TUESDAY: Surround yourself with friends and family. Spend time with the people who support you. Meet with someone you’ve lost touch with and want to see.

WEDNESDAY: Take care of yourself. A healthy body can lead to a healthy mind. Limit smoking and alcohol. Drink plenty of water and eat healthy foods. Get enough rest.

THURSDAY: Give of yourself. Volunteer your time and energy to someone else and you’ll feel good in return.

FRIDAY: Do something different. Explore new interests by taking a class, visiting a park, going to a museum or starting a journal.

SATURDAY: Value yourself. Treat yourself with kindness and respect. Make a list of your successes, talents and skills. Read it the next time you need a lift.

Even if you’re busy, try to do something each day that helps you handle your stress and get back to enjoying the summer. If you’re still feeling anxious, it may also help to talk things over with a counselor.
